SEASONAL GROUNDS & MAINTENANCE LABORER-PERKINS PARK

General Summary:

Under the supervision of the Recreation Specialist, the Grounds & Maintenance Laborer is responsible for performing grounds keeping, facility upkeep, and general maintenance to ensure the park remains clean, safe, and welcoming for visitors. This role includes landscaping, minor repairs, operational support, guest services, and office duties .

Essential Functions:

• Operates tractors with mowers, riding mowers, and power mowers to cut grass in the County parks.
• Trims grass, trees, and shrubs with power and hand equipment. Rakes leaves and picks up litter. Empties trash cans and barrels.
• Performs building and equipment maintenance such as maintaining water and sewer lines and repairing picnic tables, other park equipment, boat dock, and boat launch.
• Operates the harbor facility in times of peak use. Registers boaters and assigns mooring slips. Dispenses gasoline and pumps out vessel sewage holding tanks. Stays in contact with seasonal boat moorers.
• Prepares and paints equipment, structures, signs, and other items.
• Installs landscape timbers, spreads woodchips, plants trees, and flowers, and performs other landscaping tasks.
• Cleans park shelters, restrooms, and other facilities. Replenishes supplies as necessary.
• Responds to complaints in the park, such as barking dogs, facilities out of order, or maintenance problems. Assists the Park Manager by communicating regulations to members of the public who are making a complaint.
• Registers park users, collects fees, answers the telephone, and delivers messages to campers.

Other Functions:

● Performs additional tasks as assigned by park management. Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or modified at any time.

Qualifications:

● High school diploma or equivalent required ; coursework in Parks & Recreation, Outdoor Recreation, or Facility Maintenance is a plus.

● Experience in grounds keeping, landscaping, or general maintenance preferred.

● Comfortable operating light machinery and hand tools .

● Ability to perform physical labor , including lifting, bending, kneeling, and working outdoors.

● Strong teamwork and problem-solving skills .

● Willingness to work in all weather conditions .

● Valid Michigan driver’s license preferred .

Work Conditions:

● Outdoor work environment with exposure to varying weather conditions, insects, and environmental elements .

● Frequent lifting (up to 50 lbs), bending, kneeling, and operating maintenance equipment .

● Interaction with campers, boaters, and park visitors .

● Weekend, evening, and holiday shifts may be required during peak season.
