The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.

 

HEALTH EDUCATOR:

This position serves as a health educator for the Tobacco Prevention and Control Program in the Office of Minority Health. The incumbent in this position will work with the Tobacco Prevention team to promote objectives and initiatives of the Tobacco Free Florida grant. This will include working with partners in Hillsborough County.

 

Your Specific Responsibilities:

  • Help complete tasks to achieve plan objectives for multiple policy areas under the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough Tobacco Free Florida grant.
  • Promote the adoption of public and private tobacco control policies within Hillsborough County and the state of Florida.
  • Recruit and retain middle and high school youth for participation in Hillsborough County Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) clubs; Assist students in recruiting adult SWAT club advisors.
  • Serve as liaison between Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) clubs and the Tobacco Free Partnership of Hillsborough County to coordinate activities and communicate policy initiatives and progress.
  • Assist with chaperoning SWAT activities and events. Recruit and organize additional adult chaperones for SWAT events as needed.
  • Conduct community assessments of local policies and ordinances that affect exposure to secondhand smoke, tobacco industry influences and youth access to tobacco products.
  • Promote the Florida Quitline and refer community members to tobacco cessation services offered at the local level.
  • Provide technical assistance to community organizations/partners in the area of tobacco prevention and control policies.
  • Provide input and summary for budget changes and assist with completing required tobacco program reporting.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of tobacco prevention and use reduction in the area of youth prevention, secondhand smoke, and cessation.
  • Knowledge of tobacco prevention resources.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement programs.
  • Ability to work with youth and adults.
  • Knowledge of coalition development.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work assignments and work independently.
  • Ability to build and maintain partnerships.
  • Ability to present accurate, science-based information to a variety of audiences. Skilled in written and oral communications.
  • Knowledge of evaluation methods and practices.
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision.

 

 

Qualifications:

Minimum

  • You must not use any tobacco or electronic nicotine devices (ENDS) to work in this position.
  • Willing to work outside of normal work hours to provide occasional services and attend meetings/events.
  • Have reliable transportation to use for work related purposes and a valid driver’s license.
  • At least 2 years of related job experience (public health, health education, policy change)
  • At least one year of experience using IT applications, including Microsoft Word, Teams, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint

Preferred

  • At least 1 year of experience in tobacco control or prevention
  • At least 1 year of experience working with youth.
  • At least 4 years of related job experience (public health, health education, policy change) OR a Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field.
