Mount Sinai Morningside is seeking a dedicated and experienced Geriatric Psychiatric Unit Nurse Manager to oversee and manage our specialized psychiatric care for elderly patients. This leadership position is designed for a nurse with extensive experience in geriatric psychiatric care, who is passionate about providing high-quality care to older adults with mental health needs. Responsibilities

Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital  is seeking a  Nurse Manager of Patient Care Services in Geriatric Psychiatry

In this highly visible role, you will be charged with the day-to-day operations of the Inpatient 32-bed Psych Unit. Your excellent people skills, organizational ability, and talent for communication will serve you well, as you lead your staff and build relationships with physicians and other hospital employees.

  • 24-hour responsibility for a 29-bed inpatient geriatric psychiatric unit.
  • Ensure that nursing staff follow evidence-based practices for managing psychiatric conditions in older adults. Provide clinical oversight, assist with complex cases, and ensure that care plans are tailored to the unique needs of geriatric patients.
  • Staff Management, recruitment, retention, labor relations, employee performance evaluation, staff education, and staff schedules.
  • Work closely with psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals to develop comprehensive care plans. Participate in care meetings to discuss treatment goals and adjust plans as needed.
  • Guide staff in the management of psychiatric crises and behavioral interventions using appropriate de-escalation techniques. Ensure that the unit maintains a safe and supportive environment for both patients and staff.
  • Specialized Survey process – DEA-regulated medication.
  • Performance/quality improvement projects, internal and external regulatory and survey requirements and  implement procedural and policy changes to improve operations.
  • Ensures standards and regulations of accrediting agencies such as Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Standards (JCAHO) and New York State and City Department of Health are met.
  • Prepare and review operational reports and schedules to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
  • Supply chain - Recommends cost-saving methods, such as supply changes and disposal of records to improve efficiency of department.
  • Budget - Assists in the planning of budgetary needs by analyzing short and long-term programming plans. Collaborates with department leadership to ensure the completion of the annual budget and subsequent monitoring of financial status of the department, unit or division.
  • Chairs department committees and participates in hospital committees as assigned.
  • Maintenance of OMH/JCAHO Standards and implementation and evaluation of Quality Performance Initiatives.
  • Lead patient experience/satisfaction metrics and surveys.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science with a major in nursing and master’s degree in nursing or healthcare-related field or be enrolled in a program preferred

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive clinical and nursing expertise on a clinical psychiatry unit and Med/Surg unit
  • 3-5 years of progressive management/leadership experience/success required.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Psychiatric mental health nurse preferred (Board Certified, PMHN, PMH-BC) 
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) – Crisis prevention & intervention de-escalation and training certification preferred 

Licensing and Certification Requirements (if applicable)

  • Licensed as a registered nurse, Issuing Agency: Department of Health/Office of Professions in the state of New York.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Issuing Agency: AHA
  • Psychiatric mental health nurse preferred (Board Certified, PMHN, PMH-BC) 
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) – Crisis prevention & intervention de-escalation and training certification preferred 

Compensation Statement

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $115,494.00 - $173,241.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational needs. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
