Description of Project
The Minnesota Department of Information Technology Services (MNIT) is seeking one full-time resource to design and develop visualizations, dashboards, and reports presenting procurement information for use by the MNIT procurement team, procurement leadership and other State employees.
- At a high level, the resource will design and develop visualizations, dashboards, and reports using PowerBI and other Microsoft suite tools (e.g. Power Platform) to provide data insights in a more useful and organized way based on role/need for information.
- The procurement division of the Department of IT Services (MNIT) is seeking a resource to design and develop visualizations, dashboards, and reports using PowerBI and other Microsoft suite tools (e.g. Power Platform) to provide data insights for use by procurement staff, procurement leadership, and other State employees in a more useful and organized way based on role/need for information.
- The reports and dashboards will be expected to meet the State's IT accessibility standards.
The procurement team built some initial proof of concepts for two reports but lacks Power BI experience to get the full functionality desired from the reports. Those reports are:
- CPRS Status Report – allows State employees to check status of CPRS requests
- Software Renewals Report – allows end users to see when annual software licenses renew
- The resource will be expected to work from these initial reports and improve the functionality (may require recreation of the report from scratch) based both on requests from the State but also functionality the resource believes may be useful based on their experience building similar reports.
- The resource will be expected to construct new CPRS Status Report and Software Renewals Reports improving upon the general functionality of procurement's proof of concept reports.
- The resource will be expected to work with procurement and other selected stakeholders to create and refine basic user stories.
- The resource will also be expected to suggest other improvements or user stories for the reports based on their knowledge and expertise.
- The resource may also be expected to work with MNIT Procurement on additional needs once the initial reports have been delivered.
Sample Tasks
- Design and develop visualizations, dashboards, and reports to communicate complex data insights to stakeholders.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and develop data visualization solutions that meet their needs.
- Advise on best practices and strategy for combining data from different sources into a cohesive dataset that can be used in Power BI.
- Leverage Power Platform tools to automate processes.
- Construct automation routines to export data to other mediums (e.g. Excel)
- Lead Power BI training, mentoring, and co-development with business area employees
- Ensure all reports meet agency and performance requirements
- Configure and establish best practice security and access management controls around reporting environment
- Create and maintain documentation of data visualization processes, tools, and best practices.
- Develop data refresh strategies sourcing from applicable data sources
- Design reports in accordance with State of Minnesota Branding and Accessibility Standards.
- Provide knowledge transfer and training where it is necessary
Desired Qualifications
- Five (5) or more years experience in creating complex Power BI visualizations dashboards.
- In-depth understanding of the PowerBI environment (e.g. permissions, recovery, security and monitoring)
- Advanced knowledge of SQL. Power Query, and DAX and familiarity with SSRS
- Prior experience with SWIFT or CPRS
- Experience working with business users from cross-functional teams to understand business needs.
- Experience working in an Agile and iterative manner releasing minimal viable product.
- Experience utilizing communication skills with a variety of stakeholders.
- Experience in which resource used analytical and problem-solving skills to complete a project or series of tasks.
- Experience creating and documenting process and best practices.
- Experience with all Power Platform tools to utilize in conjunction with Power BI to automate reporting.
